What is a stretch limousine? The origin and evolution of limousines

 

 

Have you ever thought about why limousines became so popular?

What does the term “limousine” mean?

 

 

The term “limousine” itself refers to a classic car body, which is essentially a 4-door closed-body automobile. This body style was the earliest to spread, and later, famous and popular car brands used these luxury-class models to create the limousines (abbreviated as ‘limo’) we know and use today.

Consequently, the terms “limousine” and “limo” were also applied to larger, longer versions. These elongated vehicles with a classic car shape are called stretch limousines (or stretch limos).

The term “limousine” is often used incorrectly in both Hungarian and English. It is commonly used to refer to classic saloon models, although these vehicles are correctly called sedans.

To avoid the misuse of words and misunderstandings, the prefix “stretch” is often added before the word “limousine.” However, anyone familiar with the topic will immediately associate the terms “limousine” and “limo” with the stretched versions.

Most limousine rental companies prefer to include these stretch limos in their fleets.

 

 

Where does the word “limusine” come from?

 

 

In fact, the word “limousine” comes from a French feminine adjective called “Limoges”. Limoges is a large city in central France, on the banks of the river Vienne. It is the seat of the Limousin region and the Haute-Vienne department.

 

This settlement is the cultural and historical city of France. This is the place where chauffeur-driven vehicles became widespread in the 1700s.

 

Rich people differentiated themselves and drew attention to themselves by traveling in a separate compartment, separated from the person driving the car. These horse-drawn carriages were the forerunners of today’s limousines, limos, but that’s not the reason why the name “limousine” stuck.

 

In this region, shepherds wore a characteristic hooded cloak. On these cars, only a protruding cloak protected the driver from the elements. People say it was very similar to what shepherds were wearing in the Limoges region, so they started to call these chariots and horse-drawn carriages, limoges as well.

 

The first motor-driven limousine was built in 1902, designed in a way that the driver was sitting outside, in front of the closed compartment in an open driver’s cab.

 

This design was also very similar to the carriages prevalent in the French region of Limousin, and consequently, these types also inherited the name “limousine”, the English equivalent of “limoges”, that is still in use today, and the first thing that comes to mind upon hearing the word is a luxury vehicle driven by a driver.

 

 

The evolution of limousines

 

 

Construction of today’s limousines began in the United States. The first actual stretch limousine was built in 1928 in Arkansas. This, and the next few limousines, were called Big Band buses because only famous leaders and bands were the customers.

 

Initially, they did not stretch the body of the models on which the limousine was based. Stretching was a method used for convenience only, mainly to increase legroom.

 

Later the seats were arranged in a way to face each other for added comfort. These limousines were not suitable for accommodating many people, their maximum capacity was calibrated for 5-7 passengers.

 

Limousine production, used in actual parlance today, began its career in the 1930s. However, many people don’t know that the end-product limo is not built on the conveyor belt of the company that produces the models that will be turned into a limousine later on.

 

These companies do nothing but make suggestions on how the cars should be converted into limos.

 

 

Why did stretch limousines become so popular?

 

 

The purpose of limousines was to serve the elite, and, in addition to comfort, limousines symbolized wealth, prosperity, or even power. It was a luxury item, a service of high prestige and these vehicles were – without exception – driven by a chauffeur.

As a result of the emerging demands, longer limousines, today’s stretch limos appeared later, which were mainly used by larger bands, and later hotels and even actors started to use them for airport transfer services, recognizing the opportunities offered by limousine rental.

 

Over time, limousines have become increasingly popular. The goal has been to take full advantage of top quality transportation. Limousines were deployed in all areas: in addition to transporting presidents, ministers, movie stars and tourists, limos were also gaining ground in the field of airport transfers, sightseeing tours or birthday parties.

 

Along with the needs, various limo companies were formed, and thanks to new technologies and different vehicle types, they are producing super stretch limousines with even larger capacity than that of a bus, taking limousine rental to another level.
